Norfolk Southern 11J Caught by Hotbox Detector!
August 13, 2007, Noon: Watch at least the first 3 minutes, this video is an entire documentary on what happens when a train gets a hotbox, in this case it was a false alarm. 11J has units NS 9674, UP SD70M 4897, and NS ES40DC 7510. I thought I was just filming the 'all the 11J' as usual, but was surprised to hear an alarm and then the detector report 'Hotbox, southside, axle two five seven!' I have many clips on this video, the first being the train passing, then locations blocked by the stopped 11J. Then his headend moves to clear the crossings about 1 and a half hours later. Notice the conductor walking back. Then the train finally moves for a bit and then stops at CP Dorf for a recrew, crew was due at 3 and the train sat there until 4:30. The train got moving by 5, a whopping 20 miles in 5 and a half hours. Hence the name 'all day 11J' which was given by the dispatcher to 11J a few days prior to this incident. Transcript for scanner conversation: (Detector), 'NS harrisburg east to the 11J, engine Ninety-Six Seventy-Four over' '11J over' 'yeah I heard that, southside two five seven, bring it to a safe stop let me know what you find over' 'Alright uh, I'm going to have Wernersville blocked probably over' 'Yeah well that's the breaks that's the way it goes, you uh, stop your train safely now over' 'Roger, stop' 'Harrisburg East out' '11J out'.
